In 2008 we began a new project to investigate toxicity in our watershed. Stevens Creek was listed for toxicity in October of 2006 by the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board of the California Environmental Protection Agency and we have been interested in determining the extent of the problem for some time. We decided to utilize a new product from Assure Controls, inc. called Qwiklite which employs sensitive bioluminescent plankton to indicate the presence and level of toxicity in water or embedded sediments. As toxicity increases the bioluminescence of plankton exposed to a sample decreases. (Bioluminescence is a noun defined: "Emission of visible light by living organisms such as the firefly and various fish, fungi, and bacteria."
