Toxicity Testing PDF Print E-mail

In 2008 we began a new project to investigate toxicity in our watershed.

Stevens Creek was listed for toxicity in October of 2006 by the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality  Control Board of the California Environmental Protection Agency and we have been interested in determining the extent of the problem for some time.

We decided to utilize a new product from Assure Controls, inc. called Qwiklite which employs sensitive bioluminescent plankton to indicate the presence and level of toxicity in water or embedded sediments. As toxicity increases the bioluminescence of plankton exposed to a sample decreases.

(Bioluminescence is a noun defined: "Emission of visible light by living organisms such as the firefly and various fish, fungi, and bacteria." The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Third Edition.)

See "Partnership Yields First Results" in the SPCWC Blog for a report on toxicity testing.

Wish List

We are always in need of items to further our work.  This is a list of the things we are currently wishing for:

  • The Council needs to find office space somewhere in our watershed and hopefully near Stevens Creek.
  • Wading boots, small sizes for women.
  • magnetic stirrer  and bars
